What are the top three things affecting our industry today?
The Internet, the celebrities versus the performers, and the politics.
The Internet has created this web of information, whether it's shows put on it by the studios themselves or people uploading on YouTube. More and more people tune into the webcast of shows and films rather than watching them live on television or at the theatres. Not to mention, the numerous casting and film announcements that are given out so easily compared to before when we didn't know who was in a film until the actual film or even the publicity came out.
Celebrities versus performers. While a good chunk of celebrities are also performers, such as Clooney and Cruise, there are the celebrities who became celebrities for not really doing anything... important. Paris Hilton, Nicole Richie, the people from "The Hills"... people/viewers see these people and because they're in the "news" all the time, they are lumped together with actual stars like Matt Damon, Johnny Deep, Nicole Kidman, Halle Berry and the combination brings the entire entertainment industry down. After their 15 minutes of fame is up, they should just disappear and let real talent take center stage again.
The politics, whether it's the US political structure or the internal industry political structure. Everyone wants their voices to be heard. Some would speak for Obama or Clinton, while others speak for the WGA or SAG. Each affects the industry... because those in the industry affects those watching it. 18 year old Cindy in Topeka loves Natalie Portman, who apparently supports Clinton, so guess who Cindy is going to vote for? Everyone who has a recognizable face and/or name gives an impression to those watching, even with politics....
