Mark Gompertz, Executive Vice President and Publisher of Touchstone, Fireside, and Howard Books, has been at Simon and Schuster since 1993 and is responsible for the editorial and publishing activities of the three imprints.
After graduating summa cum laude from Boston University with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1976, Mr. Gompertz wrote film reviews and worked briefly as a production assistant at WBZ-TV, Boston. He started his career in publishing at The Overlook Press where he held a series of jobs over ten years from publicity director to editor-in-chief to general manager. At Overlook he edited Alain Silver???s FILM NOIR: An Encyclopedic Reference to the American Style; Clem Labine???s THE OLD HOUSE JOURNAL COMPENDIUM, and Raymond Loewy???s INDUSTRIAL DESIGN. Under his helm, Overlook had its first national bestseller, A BOOK OF FIVE RINGS by Miyamoto Musashi.
In 1986 Mr. Gompertz became senior editor at Crown Publishing. There he edited Stephen Sondheim???s INTO THE WOODS, Dick Schaap???s SIMMS TO McCONKEY, Milton Berle???s PRIVATE JOKE FILE, and Ken Davis??? New York Times bestseller, DON???T KNOW MUCH ABOUT HISTORY.
Mr. Gompertz became, in 1989, Associate Publisher and then Publisher of Avon Trade Paperbacks, a line he originated and guided to great success. For Avon he personally acquired the bestsellers: David Fromkin???s A PEACE TO END ALL PEACE, Caroline Kennedy???s IN OUR DEFENSE, Dennis McFarland???s THE MUSIC ROOM and Colleen McCullough???s FORTUNES FAVORITES, which he also edited.
At Touchstone, Fireside and Howard, Mr. Gompertz has published over one hundred bestsellers including Ursula Hegi???s STONES FROM THE RIVER (which he also edited) Philippa Gregory???s THE OTHER BOLEYN GIRL, Sean Covey???s 7 HABITS OF HIGHLY EFFECTIVE TEENS, Iyanla Vanzant???s IN THE MEANTIME, JA JANCE??? HAND OF EVIL, Neale Godfrey???s MONEY DOESN???T GROW ON TREES, Paris Hilton???s CONFESSIONS OF AN HEIRESS, Fantasia???s LIFE IS NOT A FAIRYTALE, Carolyn Kepsher???s CAROLYN 101, The Motley Fools??? INVESTMENT GUIDE, and Allison Dubois??? WE ARE THEIR HEAVEN .
