What are the top three things affecting our industry today?
The obvious answer is the internet/downloading etc
An answer that is, I feel often overlooked, is that there isn't enough originality. Companies seem to hold on to whatever quick trend is out there and beat it to death, they cram as many versions of that one idea in the interest of competition then complain that the cinema audience numbers are down the world over...You also hear often that, for example, period drama films are hard sells, there isn't a wide audience for them and so on...So why then, since 1988-2007 have 10 of the Best Picture Academy Award winners been set before 1950? It is a debate that I welcome, I love talking about movies and the industry and certainly where and if I am wrong, I would most certainly acknowledge and retract.
Risks go hand in hand with this business, that's a given yet it doesn't seem like they are being taken, there seems to be a search for either a sure thing or a comfortable cushion that will do something, not necessarily something amazing...but something nonetheless. It is time that we went back to making film and television because it was good, different and exctiting, if we make it like that, the people shall return.......
