What are the top three things affecting our industry today?

1) Digital technologies (a broad term) is currently having of the biggest affects on our industry. It's allowed for prices to significantly drop for cameras and computers so virtually anyone can shoot their own film and edit it in their home. Although this certainly brings a lot of poor quality, unmarketable films to be made, but it does allow for those who have the talent, but not the money to make their own films.

2) The Internet is allowing for a new type of distribution of films. No longer must a film be advertised or marketed in a way that requires millions of dollars to gain an audience. Anyone can make a film and find various ways of marketing it to get themselves noticed and even be successful financially doing so.

3) The length of theater runs over recent years is hurting the industry. Now a movie is in the theaters for only a few weeks, and then quickly pushed out on DVD or Blu-ray only a few months later. This has caused audiences to wait until the DVD or Blu-ray release rather than seeing the movie in the movie theater. Ticket prices are up, but tickets sales are down compared to where they should be. Movies should be allowed to stay in theaters longer and DVD and Blu-ray released delayed for 6-12 months like they used to instead of 3-4 months like they are now.

I've been working on and off in the industry for about eight years now. And in that time, I've had the opportunity to work with a lot of people. And I can honestly say that I've never worked with anyone as professional as Michael Halper. He has a real eye for cinematography, but is also just a good person to have on set. He makes everyone feel comfortable, and is a total trooper, willing to stay long after most of the other crew has left, to get that final shot.
