First and foremost, the industry will be as affected by the economy downturn as the rest of industry. Therefore, the indepent shoe string film/tv producer may thrive.

Second, the aging baby boom population which continues to be huge and looking for entertainment but not interested in bang, shoot-em, car crashes. The real issue is how to attract that population with thought provoking, strong character driven stories. That area of the population has the time to attend film and/or watch television.

Lastly, how to get away from the "dummy-down" mentality of many TV shows and attract audiences back into both the theatres and to prime time television with quality, thought provoking entertainment.

the state of the economy does have an effect on the industry, but not as much as the auto industry- hollywood will survive. I'd say that new media is the current lynchpin in Hollywood's struggles today. The internet is both a boon and an albatross to studios. Look at ManiaTV.com, they started out in Colorado with the idea of an internet television channel. set scheduled programing like broadcast, they are funded off of product placement and banner ads. Their business plan has panned out so well that they moved to LA, bought Occidental Studios, and have already expanded to buying out the entire block. There is money to be made off of the internet, but the studios are just trying to figure out how best to set up derricks and drill in.

First of all, I think what is affecting this particular industry, is that everything has been done to death, there isn't one original mind amongst all those who are in the industry.
The economy is what it is, the dollar is just as strong as it was years ago.
as far as obtaining funding from the government, then you should expect more regulations, after all i would not want to give anyone any money that puts out mediocre films and other various products.
it all goes back to being 'orignial'. and since the principles of reality have been inverted, maybe you should try the truth these days, not the disneyland version. people are tired of the same junk entertainment.
we expect the truth, and nothing else.

1.Lack of development and sustainability. Labels are so concerned with the bottom line that they get anyone with blood and turn them into the next big them The label then juices the new, "hot" artist to (career) death. A history of quality products will foster consumer confidence, which would sustain sales at times of recession, when discretionary spending declines. Music that endorses societal ills is never going to help the industry sustain itself in the long term. It may be hot now, but it won't be hot later.
2. Nepotism and Personal Favors. The fact that Johnny is your nephew will not automatically make him able to pick talented artists, manage a business, etc. Likewise, Sue's sultry appearance does not automatically make her sound like Aretha.
3. Piracy. The average consumer is subliminally affected by images of the industry, as portrayed by the media. People THINK they are seeing wealthy artists making millions of dollars everyday (which is true in some cases), but they are really seeing is an advance that has to be recouped or "9 cent per album." Thus, the average consumer sees the rich getting richer, but not the people getting laid off or the labels folding.
