Experiences at Catalan Film School (ESCAC)

The School of Film Studies in Catalonia (Spain) has a great curriculum and a very experienced faculty. There are few film schools in Spain and ESCAC is one of the most recognized together with ECAM (Madrid). ESCAC is located only 30 minutes from Barcelona in the city of Terrassa. The public transportation allow students to acces the school easily although some choose to share an apartment in Terrassa. The school offers an Undergraduate degree, 4 years of study. The first year is common for everyone. You will learn the BASICS in : Film History, Cinematographic language, how to use diferent cameras, editing, photography, etc. The first course it is an introduction, mainly focused in lectures and just a few practices with the camera. The second year one start playing with the cameras and shooting the first important projects. In the studio classes you'll learn how to focuse on the story and how to adecuate on a short budget. One you pass the second you'll be asked to choose specific field of study to continue the next 2 years of your undergraduate. The options are: DIRECTION, CINEMATOGRAPHY (director of photography), ART DIRECTION (focused on set design and Production Design), PRODUCTION (budgets, schedules, castings..), EDITING (Final cut Pro, AVID, ProTools, After effects...),SOUND (not music composing or scores, is based on a techincal point of view such as use of ProTools, Sound Editing, Soundstage recording, foley techniques...)and finally DOCUMENTARY. Therefore, once the student picks up the speciality (depending on its GPA) you will be focusing on a specific field.
The most reconized specialities are CINEMATOGRAPHY, DIRECTION AND ART DIRECTION. All of them offer great curriculum and deep knowledge.
